Soccer, known as footbal in many regions, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each, aiming to score goals by getting the ball into the opposing team's net. Played on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end, the game comprises two halves, typically 45 minutes each, with added time for stoppages. Players can use any part of their body except their hands and arms (except for the goalkeeper within their penalty area) to maneuver the ball. The primary method of advancing the ball is by kicking it, passing it between teammates, or dribbling it with their feet. The game is overseen by a referee and two assistant referees, who enforce the rules of the game. These rules include offside, where players cannot be nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent when the ball is played to them, and fouls, which result in free kicks or penalties depending on the severity and location of the offense. Each team aims to possess the ball, create scoring opportunities, and prevent the opposing team from doing the same. Goals are scored when the ball crosses the goal line between the goalposts and beneath the crossbar. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins, with ties settled by additional periods of play or a penalty shootout in knockout competitions. Football requires skill, strategy, and teamwork, with players constantly moving and adapting to the flow of the game in pursuit of victory.
